Did you know that some firms out there are charging $12,000 and up for church websites? I found this out when I was commissioned to research and build my church’s new site.

I didn’t have the time to do it myself, so I searched around - visited tons of sites, talked to many a salesman, looked at over 100 church sites, ‘demoed’ a few short-listed Content Management Systems - and nothing had everything I envisioned. Well, some did but those were $25,000!!! Ridiculous. I chose to design and build our church’s website myself - they were gracious enough to pay me for my time.

I started by looking at Wordpress & MovableType - free, straight forward, lots of plugins and extras, did I mention free… but in the end, it just wasn’t user-friendly, clean, or fast enough. Believe me, I like WordPress - the first version of the site was based on Wordpress and it lived for.Plus we wanted certain features that didn’t perform as well as I though they should. Podcasting, Event Calendar, Newsletter, etc, etc

I built a site that would have cost between $8,000 to $10,000 in 1 month- using software that cost me less than $600. I am very familiar with this software, so its something everyone can do, but I figured why not help other churches that have a budget of under $2,500 to get a $10,000 site.
